Bomb or Bomb Threat


Definition:
A device present in a building or on the campus which may or may not have exploded or an individual threatening with a device on the campus.

Signals:
None

Steps of action:
All staff and faculty should inspect their own areas and perform the following steps:
  1. Obtain as many details as possible if a bomb threat is made. Check the exit area to assure there is not a bomb near the exit, then Evacuate the building through only those exit(s) that have been cleared and move students at least 500 feet away from the building.
  2. Suspicious items should be reported to the Safety Coordinator or Building Security Office.
  3. Protect face and head with arms, books, coats, etc. from flying debris.
  4. Keep face and head protected until flying debris ceases.

  1. Check exits to assure that they can be safely used
  2. Determine the need for evacuation and notify faculty/staff
  3. Assign qualified staff to first aid assistance at evacuation site.

Bomb threat questions:
  1. If you receive a bomb threat call, remain calm and elicit as much information as possible from the caller.
  2. Call 911 immediately; give them the information describing the caller's voice, any background noises, and the exact wording of the message.
  3. Notify an official of the building in which you are located.
  4. Don't touch suspicious packages; inform the authorities and let the experts decide what to do.
